Augsburg cathedral:

From the city centre, you can’t miss the 62-metre-high towers of Augsburg cathedral in the north.

Excavations show that, where Roman housing still stood in the fifth century AD, the first large church-like structure with crypt and central nave arose between the fifth and eighth centuries. A new Carolingian building followed, whose dome collapsed in 994. Over time, Augsburg cathedral took its unmistakable form: to the west, the old Ottonian building with unplastered masonry and the two towers; in the east, immediately adjacent, the towering, white-plastered Gothic choir with significant portals in the south and north adorned with statues. In the year 2000, the Diocesan Museum – home to important works of art – was opened. Tip: the public cathedral tours!

Leopold-Mozart-Haus: the apple doesn’t fall far from the musical tree

Everyone has heard of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. But what about Leopold Mozart?

In the building of the same name on Frauentorstrasse, you can find out all about Mozart’s father – who was born in this house in 1719 – in eleven theme rooms spread across several storeys. The permanent exhibition in the museum dedicated specifically to the father of the music genius is interactive: you will therefore find an accessible coach, a small baroque theatre, several stations for making music, and a sensory room, in which sounds can be experienced with various senses. Given that only a few items belonging to Leopold Mozart exist, the old craft house includes a number of letters from the German composer, who grew up in Augsburg’s cathedral district.
